The magimagi is the plaited coconut fibre rope attached to the matanitanoa (front of the kava bowl). Also called the sau which represents the (imaginary) line connecting the Tanoa to the turaga/chief. The universal belief in Fiji is that it posses mythical power once the sau is spread. The buli are the cowry shells attached to the magimagi/sau. Buli denotes ‘chiefliness’.

The front of the Tanoa with the magimagi and buli generally faces the chief or the highest ranking person present, however in the Cakaudrove it is in reverse due to an old legend.
